Control Panel Design Standards in South Africa: SANS, IEC & Wiring Best Practices

Cretek2 min read

Guide to control panel design and wiring standards for South African industry. SANS 10142, IEC 60204, wiring practices, component selection, and panel layout for industrial control panels.

Well-designed control panels are the foundation of reliable industrial automation. For South African panel builders and system integrators, compliance with SANS 10142 (the Wiring of Premises standard) and IEC 60204 (Safety of Machinery — Electrical Equipment) is essential for safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Control Panel Layout Principles

Design panels with separate compartments for power and control voltages. Place PLCs, HMIs, and networking equipment in the upper section of the panel away from heat-generating components. Use DIN rail mounting for all modular components and maintain minimum 100mm clearance at the top and bottom of the panel for airflow.

Wiring Standards and Practices

Use ferrule-terminated wire ends for all screw-terminal connections. Maintain wire colours: brown/black/grey for AC phases, blue for neutral, green/yellow for earth, and 0-10V DC signal wiring in shielded twisted pairs. Number all wires with permanent markers or labelling systems matching your electrical schematic.

Component Selection for South African Conditions

Select components rated for ambient temperatures up to 55°C common in South African factory environments. Use IP54 minimum enclosures for indoor panels and IP65 for outdoor installations. Include surge protection devices on all incoming power and signal cables to protect against lightning-prone regions like Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Thermal Management

Calculate heat dissipation for all panel components and select appropriate cooling solutions — natural convection for low-power panels, filtered fan units for medium power, and air conditioning or heat exchangers for high-density installations in hot environments.
